New hobbies outside of simfiles?

by BLueSS » Tue Aug 21, 2012 4:13 pm

Most of the old bemani community has seemed to move on to new and exciting things in their life, such as college, post-college jobs, starting families... but we still have hobbies.

What hobbies are you into now outside of bemani/simfiles?

I am currently obsessed with euro-style board games.
Games like Small World, Carcassonne, Ticket To Ride, etc...

I really want to say "I took up cosplay and light drinking" but it wouldn't really be true...

My primary hobbies these days are piano - both jazz and classical - and Brazilian capoeira. I also do my best to keep up on my Japanese skills. And my next quest is to learn the shamisen :D But first I have to find one...and also somebody who can teach me, because I hear it's very hard to learn.

I still play a lot of music games (ITG, PIU, Technika, and pop'n music primarily).

I don't consider myself a board game guy, but I love Settlers of Catan to death and play it whenever I can get a like-minded group together. Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne are also tons of fun.

I've had ultimate frisbee and piano as hobbies for many years, but lately I've been getting into singing while playing my ukelele. The sound of the instrument helps relieve a lot of grad school stress... and so does pilates. I might also get into writing songs soon, since a friend hooked me up with Pro Tools. Math is taking up a big chunk of my life right now, though!

So this?

I've taken up the latter, although not quite as much lately cuz in Minneapolis everyone who drinks is 30+, at least until September 1st. =\

Oh, and ultimate! Except my body hates running for long periods of time, regardless of the fact that I did XC for 3 years, so I usually settle for mild pick-up games or tossing around the disc with friends.

And juuby, let's make galing OPM sometime once I'm pro at Pro Tools cuz I'm going to school for that.

This year I got a girlfriend. While not a hobby, it has distracted me from simfile work all year long because it is a long distance relationship and our main method of communication is Skype every night.

In terms of hobbies, I have been playing TF2 a bit more recently, and I still have a ton of games on Steam to play (664, if what Steam says is true). Heavily distracted with those. I've also tried my hand at music making, although haven't made too much progress with that.

Let me guess, someone got addicted to the summer sales? :)

I think most of my games were bought during the summer sale in 2010, but along the way there have been new game releases I wanted, sales on games every day, etc. I get carried away with the big sales, although this past summer sale I did pretty good in not going overboard by buying only 23 games and a few add-ons (mostly older titles, only two or three were recent but heavily discounted at one point). I think that I didn't go overboard because I just got back from Anime Expo and didn't have too much money to spend anyway.

Man, where to begin.

  • Work. Lots of it. Got my name on a patent though :)
  • Extreme mortgage paying. (We'll own our house outright within a year.)
  • TF2, mostly Payload. (Steam ID)
  • Rock Band.
  • Another giant Steam backlog - along with a lot of other game backlogs. Game time just isn't what it used to be.
  • Also board/card games. Main ones lately have been Agricola, Seven Wonders, and Quarriors. I'm waiting on my copy of Puzzle Strike from Kickstarter.
  • Fantasy football (American).
  • Relatedly to the last two, I'm designing a football-themed card game. Somewhat on hold, but I'll be picking it up again shortly.
  • Gardening. Hard in a townhouse when you don't own land, but jalapenos grow in pots pretty well.
  • Grilling. Got a used smoker for $3 at a garage sale; worth every penny.

I'm sure I could think of more if I tried.
A crossbeats REV. stream? On Twitch? It's more likely than you think!
